Gateway to the Millennium

by Peter Robson
(a personal journey through 1000 years of art and civilization)

Every artist's individual form of expression is influenced by his journey through life.

The most significant moments in my childhood experiences were memories of being removed to the country in wartime Britain. At a very young age I was deeply affected by the woods and streams of Somerset. Trees in particular were mysterious and magical; the great oaks and giant elms sparkled and danced in the summer sunlight.

With the overwhelming beauty of nature first experienced as a child, I have attained in my life as an artist a spiritual philosophy commensurate with my inner feelings.

In painting "Gateway to the Millennium" all the joy and mystery I experienced as a child came back to me in waves of thought. I have felt closest to the incomprehensible meaning of life. With all the knowledge of the last thousand years, we pass through the Gateway to the Millennium into the dawning of a new century.

"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as if it is infinite." (William Blake)

Only by raising our consciousness can we possess the wisdom to use this knowledge.

Peter Robson

Peter was commissioned to create this painting by the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation (formerly York County Hospital Foundation) in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada to celebrate the millennium and their fundraising gala in October. The project has been financed by a private collector and as such, 100% of the proceeds from the print sales will go to the Hospital Foundation.

In viewing this painting one is immediately arrested by the drama on the right hand side - the brightest part of the painting is the actual "gateway" through which we can pass into the next millennium. The gateway itself opening through a great glass structure invites us to reflect on the artist's journey through the painting to reach this point.

The visual journey through the painting should be explored from top right to top left, down to bottom left, across to bottom right, and then back up to the "gateway". Starting with today's dramatic Toronto skyline and its glass structures of towering achievement, we travel back in time past a series of architectural accomplishments, each one a part of the artist's personal vision - the Chrysler building, the Arc de Triomphe, St. Peter's (the Vatican), a medieval castle, and Canterbury Cathedral, where Peter was apprenticed as a boy, a true symbol of the beginning of the millennium.

The many arches shown in the painting help us recognize the building of time. The curved central arch of the painting is an arch of discovery and invention.

The sculpture of the ancient hunter symbolizes the continuing and ever present threat to our environment and in the painting you will find many species of wildlife both obvious and camouflaged, co-existing with the landscape of giant elms, great oaks, redwood and rain forest, and magnificent flora and fauna. This reminds us of the delicate balance in our ecology.

The astronaut, illuminated by the Gateway to the millennium, represents one of the last frontiers of discovery in the new millennium.
